Witches and wigs and wisdom, oh my! We sat down with Joe Locke, who plays Teen on Agatha All Along, to discuss witchcraft lore, learning on the set, and costumes from the show.
Walking on to the set of Agatha All Along the first time, Joe was able to come equipped with the witchcraft lore of his homeland. “I’m from the Isle of Man, which has always been rich with witchcraft history,” he shared. “There’s a famous story in the Isle of Man about Jinny the witch. On Halloween, kids sing about Jinny the Witch—they don’t say ‘trick or treat,’ they have to sing the song in order to get the candy. This witch was arrested for witchcraft because she healed someone in the town. She got off in the end and became a famous spokeswoman for witchcraft.
“She was probably just a nice lady who was trying to help,” he added.
There were many moments—particularly the scenes filmed along the “Witch’s Road”—that made it feel like Halloween everyday on set. Fans can expect to see Agatha and her Coven dressed in over-the-top costumes as they journey down the road.
“I think my favorite outfit were the trousers from episode four,” Locke said, “I didn’t really like the wig.”
“I don’t think a 70’s hairstyle really suits me,” he also joked.
Before landing the role of Charlie on Heartstoppers, Joe Locke was preparing to apply for drama school. “Being on set and working is the best drama school I could ever go to. There’s nothing better than learning from experience,” Locke said of his costars, including Kathryn Hahn and Patti LuPone, “I was such a rookie and I am still am a rookie. So getting to watch these incredible women work was pretty amazing.”
One thing’s for certain—Joe Locke feels confident in his ability to keep Marvel secrets without a sigil spell. “It’s been hard but it’s been getting easier,” he shared. “It’s been almost over two years I’ve been keeping these secrets now. It’s become almost second nature.”
The first two episodes of Agatha All Along are now streaming on Disney+. You can catch new episodes released every Wednesday at 9 pm ET.
