A Night of Latin Elegance at Son Cubano

As the blue light gently washed over us upon entry, encapsulating the essence of Manhattan’s majestic skyline, Son Cubano proved to be more than a dining experience—it was a journey into the glamour days of 1930’s Havana.

The restaurant, now gracing the Port Imperial Riverfront, seamlessly blends modern Cuban dishes with Latin flavors, creating a vibrant ambiance that complements its breathtaking, unobstructed views of the pristine Manhattan skyline.

On a frigid January night along the Hudson, when the echoes of the holiday season are a distant memory and the windchill of New York’s towering skyscrapers force intrepid travelers indoors, Son Cubano was a haven — a bustling convention of diners in warmth, conversation, and light. It was a clear testament to its allure as a culinary destination. The restaurant’s roots in the Meatpacking District, founded by the trailblazing Duran family, have transcended time and space, evolving into a symbol of Latin hospitality and culinary excellence.

Our culinary adventure began with an array of appetizers that set the stage for what would be a remarkable dining experience. The trio of empanadas, featuring tender beef, crispy chicken, and a delectable cheese & spinach filling, showcased the kitchen’s skillful mastery of flavors. The shrimp tacos followed suit, offering a harmonious blend of fresh ingredients that danced on the palate.

The main courses elevated the evening to a crescendo of gastronomic delight. The roasted free-range chicken, perched on a bed of mashed potatoes with a scallion salad and hoisin beef jus, exhibited impeccable execution—the crispy skin a testament to culinary finesse. The filet mignon medallions, paired with honey nut squash, cippolini, wild mushrooms, and queso frito, demonstrated simplicity at its best, heightened by a remarkable sauce that elevated the dish to new heights.

The desserts, a symphony of creativity and sweetness, left an indelible impression. The Cheesecake Lollipop Tree, a whimsical and shareable creation, brought a playful touch to the conclusion of our meal. The Quatros Leches, adorned with whipped cream and wild berries, provided a delightful ending that lingered on the palate.

Throughout our dining experience, the service was impeccable. Our server, a true ambassador of Son Cubano’s hospitality, guided us through the menu with enthusiasm and expertise. The recommendations were spot-on, enhancing our culinary journey.

Son Cubano, with its roots deeply embedded in the culinary landscape of the Meatpacking District, has evolved into a culinary gem on the Port Imperial Riverfront. The collaboration between the Duran family and Celebrity Chef David Burke (of Park Ave Kitchen fame), alongside Executive Chef Brian Morales, has resulted in a menu that pays homage to the rich heritage of Afro-Cuban music and the vibrant spirit of Havana.

In conclusion, Son Cubano transcends the ordinary, offering not just a meal but a captivating experience where the fusion of Latin flavors, lively atmosphere, and impeccable service converge to create a night of Latin elegance against the backdrop of the iconic Manhattan skyline. It’s a culinary journey that lingers in the memory, beckoning diners to return for more.
