A blizzard didn’t stop the masses from heading to out in freezing temps for Thakoon’s Spring 2017 RTW presentation Thursday evening.
Upon arrival, guests were welcomed into a large room with a dome-like structure and red rose petals littering the ground. The structure, a screen displaying graphic sketches and prints, culminated in a mirrored ceiling. Guests were treated to FIJI water and canned Babe Rosé With Bubbles while waiting for the presentation to begin, which ran every 15 minutes.
In the past, Thakoon has gone the traditional route with a runway show at the tents at Fashion Week. This time, the new environment reflects his new take on Fashion Week and his ready-to-wear collection. That is, he’s showing clothing that will be ready to be worn in just a few months.
“It’s more focused, and more about the newness that’s coming in this drop, than trying to stretch out a show of 40 looks or so,” Thakoon told Business of Fashion. “That format doesn’t seem to work with our business model as much.”
But the front row? It was anyone’s game. When the lights dimmed and the music piped up, those closest to the dome got the best show in the house. Models came out one by one and stationed themselves at different points under the mirrored ceiling, allowing all guests to look up and see the looks.
The collection included only 10 looks, but it seemed complete nonetheless. Each look had many different parts, from separates to outerwear. Dominating the collection was a red floral pattern which tied in well with the red rose petals on the ground. There was also a slight nautical theme, with more than a few looks reminding us of the sunny weather that is just a few months away.
Favorites included a floral blouse paired with a striped skirt under a traditional khaki trench, a scalloped ivory turtleneck sweater, and a sporty three quarter sleeve purple sweater worn with wide legged green trousers with another trench tied around the waist.
