Ballet, opera, R&B, kink, theatre, circus, fashion, and burlesque. All of these things and more are featured in the latest Company XIV production Paris. Company XIV has been known to put on extravagant, imaginative, and breathtaking performances which is why we were excited to attend the world premiere of their latest show. Company XIV’s Paris is an adaptation of the classic tale The Judgment of Paris. This story is the background of the infamous Trojan War. Zeus, the king of the gods, held a banquet in celebration of the marriage of Peleus and Thetis. Eris, goddess of discord, was not invited. This caused her to seek her revenge. At the banquet, Eris threw a golden apple, saying whoever possessed the apple was the fairest one. Three goddesses claimed possession of the apple, Juno, Athena, and Venus. Zeus then decided that the person who would judge this contest would be Paris of Troy. The story revolves around the three goddesses seducing and bribing Paris for the apple, offering him wealth, power, and love. In the end, Paris decides to give the apple to Venus after she offered him the beautiful Helen of Sparta. This sparks the start of the Trojan War, the most famous story ever told (thanks Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom). Company XIV decided to focus their performance on the contest for the apple and this show was incredible. Words cannot describe how amazing it was to sit and experience this but this show left us #shook. We were so shook.
One of the major highlights of this show for us were the musical numbers. Athena, played by Marcy Richardson, stole the show when performing Adele’s “Skyfall” while doing an incredible and intricate pole dance routine. And when Venus, played by the talented Storm Marrero, started singing Rihanna’s “Love on the Brain,” we, as in everybody in the audience, were applauding and cheering on her performance.
What we love about Company XIV so much is the fact that they embrace the idea of “genderf*ck.” We were extremely impressed and in awe over the fact that they decided to cast the goddess Juno with Randall Scotting. Randall was charismatic, funny, and just plain sexy. He was definitely a person to remember and watching him undress into thigh high boot stilettos gave us our lives.
