As soon as guests walked into the rudimentary warehouse-looking space, everyone noticed the projected words on the wall. “She made broken look beautiful and strong look invincible. She walked with the universe on her shoulders and made it look like a pair of wings.” These two simple sentences introduced the theme of the upcoming collection.
Beyonce’sย Freedomย started playing, while models lived up to the powerful lyrics as they strutted down the runway. With each step the models exuded confidence, trust and beauty. Three aspects included in the inspiration behind the clothes.
The collection itself included easy to pair neutral colored pieces that can be mixed and matched with closet basic pieces. It was refreshing to see classic styles be rejuvenated with sharp details. Most of the looks had intelligently placed cutouts that enhanced the model’s figure. One of them was a more daring version of a classic jumpsuit, composed by high waisted culottes, a bandeau, and a thick strap converting all of them into a one shoulder wonder.
It is interesting to see what a newย brandย selects for its first collection. What do they think are the best products to represent their greatest efforts to the world? What would be the main purpose of the collection? Are they focusing on finding stockists and editorial coverage, or in creating a buzz, celebrities and trends?
These are all tough decisions to make. When the designer doesn’t have a clear direction, it can be reflected in his clothes; nevertheless, this was not the case at Mulhier’s first encounter with Fashion Week.
From the well thought out venue, with a feminist quote on the wall, an empowering soundtrack recognized worldwide, confident models that together joined in a fearless squad, and the perfect collection tailored to the modern woman.
For a debut show, Mulhier demonstrated that it can come up with a relevant story, wearable shapes, and a New Yorker color palette. Now let’s hope that in the near future, we can find this collection in a store nearby.
