An arrest in the death of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s aide, Carey Gabay, has been made.
On Sept. 7 in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, following the annual J’ouvert Festival, Carey Gabay was caught in the crossfire of two rival gangs shortly before 4 a.m. A stray bullet struck him in the head and left him grasping for life for nine days until he ultimately died.
According to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office, 24-year-old Micah Alleyne was arrested on murder charges along with reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a firearm.
Gabay graduated Harvard University and went on to become a first deputy counsel at the Empire State Building under Governor Cuomo. In a statement on Friday, Cuomo applauded the efforts of the investigators and prosecutors involved in the case. “Today’s arrest is a major step forward in the pursuit of justice for Carey’s family and loved ones,” he said.
The annual celebration and parade are no strangers to violence, as they have had multiple shootings that resulted in death in the past years. In 2012, a woman was shot as she watched the parade on her front stoop and in 2011, a man was stabbed to death after the parade ended. In an interview, Councilwoman Laurie Cumbo stated “From now until the parade next year, we have to address the elephant in the room,” she said. “We should utilize the carnival as a platform to discuss issues of gun violence in Brooklyn.”
