Rubin Singer F/W 16 Review

Runway shows always have the potential to thrill, because you never really know what’s going to come out next and there is always a chance for surprise.

Fashion presentations are a different beast, as you can walk in and see the whole thing in one sweep. That said, the Rubin Singer presentation at Industria studios was about as thrilling, and overwhelming, as any presentation could be. With two full stages, plus a center pavilion with more models, this was an extensive, impressive and utterly gorgeous collection. Drinks were served (along with uber hip auga fruit essence water), music blared, and the models wore dresses embellished with everything from velvet to python; not just a fashion presentation, this was a borderline cocktail party from your dreams.

As to the collection itself, while there were some ready-to-wear knits and separates, the more formal evening gowns were what really stunned. As is often the case, the devil is in the details, like a deliberately placed back zipper, colorful oversize earrings, and dresses with glass embellishments. Singer’s press release speaks of being inspired by mathematical formulation, and the glass shards, in geometric shapes, certainly correlates with that inspiration. The entire presentation followed that geometric logic, as one stage had a wave of green and then blue gowns, while the other had a more relaxed and diverse collection of pieces. But then that might be overanalyzing things; at heart this is an elegant body of work that mixes classic fabrics with new textures and flourishes.
