This summer The Museum of Metropolitan Art is feeling patriotic and will be celebrating American art through special exhibitions and events, American-inspired summer refreshments, a gallery itinerary and a whole wing furnished solely with American art.

Navigating the West: George Caleb Bingham and the River (through September 20) will be the first extensive Bingham exhibition in 25 years and will feature his compelling depictions of life on the frontier along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. This exhibit will also include a collection of preparatory drawings by Bingham that reveal the masterful qualities of his artistic process. American life of the 1920’s will be explored in Thomas Hart Benton: American Today through a ten-panel mural which is considered to be one of the most renowned American works of the period. Maurice Pendergast: Boston Public Garden Watercolors (through September 7) will feature inspiring images of one of America’s most iconic urban parks by the renowned post-impressionist painter.

The Met will also be hosting MetFridays: New York’s Night Out (Beginning July 10) which will include Conversation with a Curator: George Caleb Bingham’s Fur Trappers Descending the Missouri at 6:30 p.m., a lively discussion with the curator about an artwork that intrigues her. From 6:45-7:15 p.m. and 7:30-8:00 p.m. Gallery Performance- River Stories will present stories, music and art to museum goers. The Observant Eye at 7 p.m. will engage college and graduate students, as well as other young art enthusiasts, in deep discussion and observation.

On The American Wing museum goers can enjoy one of the most comprehensive collections of American art in the world. This collection will provide visitors with a captivating and inspiring display of the history of American art. The Roof Garden Café and Martini Bar will be featuring a special American-themed cocktail- The Met 4th– consisting of watermelon, ginger, lime and vodka to accompany the American light-fare being served. Patrons will gaze upon unparalleled views of Central Park and the NYC skyline as they enjoy their American cuisine.

All of this and more will be featured at the Met this summer from July 3- September 7. The museum is located in the heart of NYCs Upper East Side at Fifth Avenue and 82nd street.
