20 years down and many more to go
Few bars in New York City have the staying power and appeal to last 20 years, but Employees Only is one of them. Since its opening in 2004, this trailblazing venue has become a cornerstone of the city’s nightlife scene. Not only has Employees Only revolutionized how New Yorkers view cocktails, but it has also redefined the modern speakeasy experience. To mark two decades of serving iconic libations to the residents of the greatest city in the world, Employees Only threw an intimate, Prohibition-style party to celebrate this remarkable achievement. The evening kicked off at Employees Only itself, where the Prohibition-themed festivities began. Guests mingled and sipped expertly crafted cocktails, including negronis poured directly from the venue’s signature negroni fountain. As the party progressed, the atmosphere was further enlivened with live music, caviar service, and a sultry burlesque performance. As the clock neared 8:30, guests were invited to step outside for the next phase of the celebration.
Large party buses whisked attendees away to the Employees Only sister location, Macao Trading Company. What started as an intimate gathering quickly transformed into an electrifying celebration that embodied the spirit of Employees Only’s legendary soirées. Upon entering Macao, guests were greeted by burlesque dancers at the entrance, while the sounds of live swing and jazz music filled the air. The bartenders kept the drinks flowing, ensuring no glass was ever empty. Downstairs, a tattoo artist offered guests the chance to get free, Employees Only-inspired tattoos—adding yet another layer of excitement to the evening.
The party raged late into the night as guests danced, drank, and celebrated one of New York City’s most iconic bars. In a city where restaurants and bars come and go at a breakneck pace, the fact that Employees Only has thrived for 20 years is a testament to its enduring influence and legendary status. Here’s to the next 20 years!
