Alamo Drafthouse hosted a special screening of Noah Segan’s feature length writing and directorial debut, Blood Relatives.
Horror and comedy fans alike got a special treat this past week when Blood Relatives played at Alamo Drafthouse here in downtown Manhattan. Blood Relatives is a dark comedy about Francis, a self-isolating vampire whose lifestyle gets completely thrown when he meets Jane, the teenage daughter he didn’t know he had. No paternity test needed here, folks—the fangs tell you all you need to know. Francis (Noah Segan) and Jane (Victoria Moroles) are involved in a variety of escapades as they learn how to combine their lives. The film touches on a myriad of topics: Jewish culture, single parenthood, the moral implications of feeding on humans versus animals as a sanguine vampire—y’know, usual stuff. Overall, viewers are left touched as they watch Francis develop from a once guarded loner to a warmhearted father. Well, as warmhearted as a vampire could ever be.
The screening included a Q&A with Noah and Alamo Drafthouse founder, Tim League. During the Q&A Segan shared his inspiration for the film came from both his experience growing up in Jewish culture and raising his own children.
“I was raised Jewish culturally… New York Judaism is a very specific sort of culture, it’s a very specific phenomenon. Of course, its directly related to people escaping fascism, escaping genocide. And when I married a gentile, a shiksa, I kind of realized that no one was sort of going to tell that story to my family but me, that was sort of on me to do. And it became a lot of fun. And so I sort of figured, well that’s got to find its way into the movie,” said Noah, when asked about making Francis a Yiddish vampire.
As for when Noah found the time to write his screenplay and take care of his then new-born child?
“While she napped.”
Attendees also got to take home a few fun collectibles, including a “Vampire on Board” window decal, a keychain, and—you guessed it—vampire teeth.
