On The Scene: Apple TV+ Hosts NY Premiere of “Surface” [Photos]

Lies, sex, with a dash of memory loss sounds like a recipe for a thrill, tune in to “Surface” on Apple TV+ to see how this drama unravels.

Monday, July 25th, was a day of celebration in the Big Apple for the cast and crew of the new Apple TV+ series “Surface.” If you appreciated the eerie, rush-evoking nature of “Big Little Lies” and “Little Fires Everywhere’” then you should check out this series created by the same amazingly creative team.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw, the lead character and executive producer, stepped out onto the red carpet at The Morgan Library & Museum, looking more radiant than ever in her chartreuse evening gown. Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter are fellow executive producers who have joined the team on behalf of Witherspoon’s media company Hello Sunshine. Other attendees were showrunner, creator, and executive producer Veronica West, executive producer and director Sam Miller, and stars of the show Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Ari Graynor, Andres Joseph, Millie Brady, Christin Park, and Markian Tarasiuk. The cast as a whole is full of notable heavy-hitters. Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who you may know from “The Morning Show” or Marvel’s “Loki” series, is the main character who, as stated by showrunner Veronica West, “Brought this story to life in such a deep, complex, and emotional way.” You may have spotted the rest of the cast on notable shows such as “The Sopranos”, “The Invisible Man”, “The Haunting of Hill House”, “The Last Kingdom”, “Charmed”, and “The 100”. As West discussed these cast members, she exclaimed, “A girl couldn’t ask for a better group of actors to bring life into their story.”

“Surface” is a tense, anxiety-ridden thriller as it delves into the world of finding yourself and your identity through the lens of an individual (Sophie, Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s character) with extreme memory loss. Set in high-end San Francisco, Sophie embarks on a quest to put the pieces of her life back together after a traumatic head injury from falling off a boat with the help of her husband and friends…but are they really telling the truth? From the trailer, Sophie seems to believe she jumped from the boat, but would someone with a “perfect life” try to jump off a ferry? Was her life as perfect as it seemed on paper, or was that a facade? She begins to question whether or not her clean-cut, handsome husband is as good as he seems, and did she actually jump, or was she pushed? This sexy, elevated thriller begs the question: Who do you trust when you can’t trust yourself? What if you woke up one day and didn’t know your own secrets? 

“Surface” will premiere globally with the first three episodes on Friday, July 29th, 2022, on Apple TV+, followed by one new episode weekly every Friday.
