Last Saturday, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck sat with Jodie Comer and co-writer Nicole Holofcener to discuss their roles in the upcoming war film, The Last Duel.
Based on the book of the same title, The Last Duel is a modern day issue disguised under the brutal backdrop of Medieval Europe. Damon and Affleck collaborated on the script with Nicole Holofcener, a writer/director, who was able to offer a female voice to the script.
The Last Duel is a trial film of sorts, told from three very different perspectives of an attack on Marquerite De Carrouges (Jodie Comer), perpetrated by Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver). After the attack, Le Gris must defend himself from such accusations, and finally duel her husband and past enemy, Sir Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon).
When asked about the concept behind the film, co-writer Matt Damon stated “the construct was that the-the world of women is totally ignored, and overlooked, and is invisible for two-the first two acts of the movie.”
While it may look like another war epic, The Last Duel offers a lot more than just another action packed duel drama. Instead, filmmaker Ridley Scott has carefully arranged a film that deals with a lot more than it may seem.
What really sets the film apart from other war films is the fact it has much mature screenplay, dealing with intense social issues that can still be seen today.
