I’m a fan of anything Scotland. I’ve traveled there twice, marched in the Tartan Day Parade, happily lose hours rewatching Outlander, have met Sam Heughan three times, adore a good plaid, and have even experienced the Johnnie Walker Princes Street journey firsthand. So when I attended Burns Distilled at Conwell Coffee & Cocktail Hall, it felt less like an event and more like stepping into a historic Highland celebration – while drinking what I love including Johnnie Walker, Oban, Lagavulin and Buchanan’s.
The evening took place at Conwell, formerly home to the immersive Life and Trust experience. By night, the space transforms into an elegant cocktail lounge with refined drinks and shareable small plates—perfect for unwinding after work or a date night in downtown Manhattan. For Burns Distilled, it became the ideal backdrop, shifting from city lounge to a warm celebration of Scottish culture.
The night began in the grand former bank teller area, where cocktails from across the portfolio flowed —everything from Paper Planes to Espresso Martinis. A Scottish band played, complete with bagpipes, as guests mingled and explored. One standout touch was the interactive photo booth, which turned photos into sepia-toned prints featuring Robert Burns himself. At one point, Andrew Weir made an announcement and led us through a series of rooms filled with brand surprises, including a green-lit Buchanan’s room and another where “Johnnie Walker” himself sat behind a desk for photos. The journey ended in a striking industrial-style room with long communal tables, candelabras, a stage, a bar, and the iconic Johnnie Walker statue—an unforgettable setting for the evening’s performances.
Burns Distilled then unfolded into an immersive tribute to Robert Burns, paired with exceptional Scotch whisky, live music, and a traditional Scottish dinner. One highlight was the Address to the Haggis, a jovial, ceremonial moment that perfectly captured the spirit of the night. The rest of the evening was lively, educational, and heartwarming, celebrating both Burns and the history and spirits that make Scotland so special. Hosted by Andrew Weir with Broadway musicians and guest performers, the storytelling was heart-warming, fast-paced, and deeply moving — with many historical subject matters that ring true in today’s climate. The music and narrative remind us why Burns’ words still resonate centuries later.
A guided tasting featured the Diageo Scotch portfolio—Johnnie Walker, Lagavulin, Oban, and Buchanan’s—led by Ewan Morgan, Diageo’s National U.S. Luxury Ambassador. Each dram was thoughtfully introduced and perfectly timed, enhancing both the storytelling and the meal. The tasting honored the craftsmanship behind each bottle and certainly kept us warm in the winter night.
Every element—from the welcome cocktail to the final pour—felt intentional, celebratory, and deeply rooted in Scottish culture. Burns Distilled was a heartfelt tribute to Robert Burns on his 267th birthday. Between the performances, remarkable whisky, and wonderful company, it was the kind of evening that stays with you long after. For fellow fans of Scotland—or anyone curious to experience its magic without crossing the Atlantic—this was truly a night distilled to perfection. Slàinte
