And The 2016 Tony Nominees Are…

Earlier this morning, the 2016 Tony Nominations were announced at the Paramount Hotel in Times Square.

Tony winner Nikki M. James and Tony nominee Andrew Rannells were chosen to announce the nominations this year, and both were giddy while sharing the joyous news with the media, their close friends and millions of people around the country. It was clear that Michael Arden, who was nominated for his direction on the revival of Spring Awakening (also up for Best Revival of a Musical), is a close friend of James and Rannells, since the moment the actress was able to announce his name, she nearly jumped up in excitement.

Breaking the record for Tony nominations, is the incredible Lin-Manuel Miranda and his ground-breaking show, Hamilton. Not only was Miranda nominated for Best Actor in a Musical, but for Best Book, Best Score and Best Musical. In total, Hamilton received 16 nominations, including considerations for Leslie Odom, Jr., Phillipa Soo, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Daveed Diggs, Christopher Fitzgerald and Johnathan Groff, for their roles in Hamilton.

Sara Bareilles was given her first nomination, for her score of Waitress, which actress Jessie Mueller was also nominated for. This new musical, based upon the heartbreaking movie starring Kerri Russell, has also been nominated for Best Musical, giving both Mueller and Bareilles a gust of of optimism and joy after opening their show only two weeks ago.

Up for Best Play is Eclipsed, The Father, The Humans, and King Charles III, which all brought in thousands of audience members during this past season. Shuffle Along is also up for many awards, including Best Musical, Best Scenic Design, Best Lighting Direction and many acting considerations. And director Ivo Van Hove is up for Best Direction of his work on Arthur Miller’s A View From the Bridge, which is considered one of the most haunting, and inspiring pieces from this season.

This years Tony Awards will be one for the books, as Hamilton is up to take nearly every award it is up for. The performances, the fashion, the personalities… all will have to wait until the Tony’s take place at the Beacon Theatre on June 12th.
