Neal Brennan stars in the play “3 Mics” presented by John Legend and the Get Lifted Film Co.
Brennan alternates between three microphones throughout the show. The first microphone is where Brennan essentially performs a mini stand up show speaking about his “smart and sardonic” take on race and gender as well as heroes and hypocrites of the modern age. Brennan delivers several one-liners he has written over the years, but never found a home for in to the second microphones. Brennan steps in front of the final microphone to discuss his personal struggles, ranging from depression to relationships.
In the solo show Brennan gives the audience a glimpse of how a modern comedian’s mind works. Over the course of the show he reveals the challenges in his life that have shaped him as a persona and comedian including dealing with parental abuse and alcoholism. John Mulaney said in a statement the show is, “next level funny and has moments that stay with you forever.”
John Legend and Get Lifted Film Co. partners Mike Jackson and Ty Stiklorius are producing the show with director Drew Barr. The show will be performed for a limited time starting on Feb. 23 until March 13 at the Lynn Redgrave Theatre with the official opening on March 3.
3 Mics will be Brennan’s New York City theatrical debut. He’s previously worked as a producer, writer, stand-up comic and co-created the “Chappelle Show.” Along with performing in 3 Mics he also wrote the show.
