The Woman Is Back!

The McKittrick Hotel has been home to many amazing shows like Speakeasy Magick and the infamous Sleep No More.  And with New York City opening up more day by day, the long awaited play, The Woman In Black, has returned.  The show was initially launched in early 2020 with amazing reviews and fantastic reception.  The play has marked its return on October 24th within in the Club Car at the McKittrick Hotel.

The play is taken from Susan Hill’s acclaimed ghost novel.  The story centers around a young lawyer, Arthur Kipps, recalling a time in which he was sent to a remote town in England in order to settle the affairs of a recently deceased widow that his company represented.  Soon after he arrives, he notices that many of the townspeople have acted cold and distant to him after finding out the reason he is there.  It doesn’t take long after his arrival for Kipps to encounter an apparition.  It is then that Kipps starts to discover the town’s dark past and grave secrets that they have been keeping all this time.  While doing his best to survive and stay sane, Kipps is determined to know who, or what, this spectre is.

The Woman In Black at The McKittrick hotel is a play that keeps you at the edge of your seat the entire time.  Actors Ben Porter and David Acton do a masterful job at embodying the characters in the story.  David Acton in particular, has the job of playing almost every character in the play during this retelling.  Throughout the play, Acton switched from one character to the next within a moment’s notice.  And Acton did so in a way where each character was unique and identifiable.  Porter, playing the role of Kipps during the retelling, also does a wonderful job at playing the role of the young Kipps during the retelling.

Porter does an amazing job at building up the audience’s tension and anxiety levels and playing with that in order to keep everyone at the edge of their seats.  Porter’s ability to grab the attention, build up anxiety and anticipation, and release it with a scare is no small thing.  The chemistry of these two actors and their incredible talent make this revival of an already classic tale even more horrifying and engaging.  It is no surprise that when this show launched in 2020 that is received “Best Play Revival” Award from the Off-Broadway Alliance and was nominated for 3 Drama League Awards.

The Woman In Black at the McKittrick Hotel is a show that should not be missed.  It is a terrifying tale that will keep you at the edge of your seat the entire time.  Along with that, the performances of Acton and Porter is something that should be seen by everyone.  Performances are offered on Wednesday, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8pm along with a Sunday show at 7pm.  And if you decide to see the show later in the season, you also can sample some of the latest pub snacks that will be offered.  Some of the food items include Pigs in a Blanket, Scotch Eggs, an assortment of cheeses as well as some crackers to enjoy.
