There are two routes classic brands tend to take, either they withhold any semblance of innovation and attempt to strive off their founding ingenuity, or they abandon the past and attempt to reinvent themselves amongst emerging trends.
Both these roads can’t exactly be tagged for longevity. A few companies however, see both these roads as opportunities. They acknowledge their roots and keep them intact, but branch out into a wide variety of experimental lanes, even at times stepping ahead of populist trends. One of those few companies is Vans.
The robustness of the Vans name is inarguable. They’ve remained a mainstay for skater culture, and in more recent years have made a permanent settlement in Hip Hop culture as well. A rogue trend may come in and take over Tumblr and Instagram pages for a few months, but classic brands like vans will slowly and surely nudge their way back in as the trendy tides fall out to sea.
In their latest endeavor, Vans has teamed up with Opening Ceremony to showcase their collaboration with Our Legacy. Spearheaded by designer and Our Legacy cofounder Jockum Hallin, the collection pulls from the Californian skater, punk, and surf culture of the 80’s and 90’s. That gumbo has been boiled down to a clean minimalist reduction.
