‘Training Day’ Is Headed To Television

Antoine Fuqua’s crime thriller will follow the same premise as the film and looks to dominate television crime thrillers.

In the wake of the Limitless and Minority Report tv series spinoffs, it’s not a huge surprise that another great film is being groomed for the small screen. Fuqua has teamed up with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and has reportedly begun shopping the series to major networks. The show was Fuqua’s idea, and it’s only a matter of time before one of the networks bite.

The series follows the same premise as the 2001 film, but is set 15 years later in the present day. In the original film, Denzel Washington played a corrupt cop who takes a rookie cop, played by Ethan Hawke, under his wing. However, you soon find out Denzel’s character isn’t what he appears to be and is a little bit more than just a rogue detective. The original film was a critical and commercial success, even netting Denzel an Oscar. It’s possible that there may be a twist in the series, where the corrupt veteran cop will be white and the rookie cop will be black. The series will focus on the relationship between the two cops.

Fuqua may even direct the pilot. His most notable film is still Training Day, and his most recent film was Southpaw, which has been a commercial success so far. However, Training Day writer David Ayer doesn’t seem to be attached to the project, which leaves the content quality a bit in question. He’s been caught up with his upcoming project, the much talked about Suicide Squad, so it’s unlikely he will have a part in this smaller project. It will be interesting to see how the original film’s grit, very strong language, violence, and overall dark tone adjusts to TV.
