In a connection of menacing and comedic emcees, Trae let Thugger come through the studio for “Slugs”.
For those that are unaware, Trae tha Truth is the quintessential embodiment of “too gangster for your radio station” as Freddie Gibbs would say. His voice and cadence carry as much grit as his lyrics, more often than not focusing on the perils of growing up impoverished, hunting for ambition. It’s not an unique topic no, but Trae’s actually lived it and always throws in his own flavor to the content.
Trae was banned from Houston radio stations in response to being “involved” in a shooting outside a show of his. I say “involved” tentatively because the stations’s thought process was that his lyrics were the cause of the violence. It was easy to use Trae as a scapegoat while ignoring the actual sickening roots of violence in impoverished communities. However, Trae has used that to his benefit, as being banned from a station has lent to being a claim that he’s too real for radio.
On this new track, Trae continues his steez of low, gritty, and yet somehow melodic flows over tension building beats. Thugger plays as a good contrast to Trae’s low growl, and the track ends up sounding like two pitbulls with different octaves snarling on a track. That’s everything you could want from Trae. He also has his new record The Truth Pt. 2 up on iTunes for preorder here.
