After supporting roles in hit films like “Think Like A Man”, Terrence J proves with his latest film “The Perfect Match” that he can carry a film as a leading man. The film blends together elements from classic romantic comedy films “Boomerang” and “The Brothers”, serving as both homage to both the films and the black romantic comedy genre.
Like “Boomerang” the main character Charlie (played by Terrence) is a womanizer who has never been in committed relationship with any women he has had a fling with. However he has a change of heart once a beautiful, ambitious, yet mysterious young woman (played by Cassie) enters his life. What starts off as a challenge from his two best friends ends up making him reevaluate why he has never committed.
Terrence’s charm matched with Cassie’s sensuality and seductiveness create believable chemistry in the film. At times it does feel like Cassie steals the scenes between her and Terrence. Terrence’s strongest scenes are in his interactions with his sister played by Paula Patton. The film heavily explores sexuality from both the male and female prospective and it’s not dealt with lightly. The language although sexually strong at times manages not to come off as raunchy or vulgar making sure not to go overboard.
To make the film relatable, relationships are examined not only from a single male prospective, but from engaged and married male prospective as well. While most films follow a typical approach in presenting why men have commitment phobia, The Perfect Match deals with it creatively in a new way that hasn’t been explored before.
One interesting thing is the cameos which felt a bit out of place and the reason behind having a certain popular rapper at the moment appear in the film can make the film feel a bit dated. But all in all if you want to experience a light positive film on love and exploring how to move forward from the emotional wounds of loss, The Perfect Match, just might be the perfect match for you.
