The network is planning on packing its development slate with more content for women from women – welcome to Fempire.
Lifetime network has taken steps towards building a multi-platform programming dedicated to growing its position as a leader in women’s entertainment destinations. The new initiative is referred to as The Fempire – devoted to “entertaining and engaging the next generation of feminists by creating content for women, by women, about women.” Some of the most prominent female contributors announced by the network are Selena Gomez, Janet Jackson, Serena Williams and Ronda Rousey.
Liz Gateley, EVP and Head of Programming commented on the announcement, “Lifetime will expand its brand into a multi-platform destination with an aggressive investment in short-form digital content that will engage and entertain our viewers 24/7. With content and conversations curated around the fourth wave of feminism, The Fempire will be a place where women come to share videos and conversations, connect with friends, learn new things and most importantly, be entertained.”
The multi-platform development will include scripted, unscripted and digital programming as well as original movies. Serena Williams will executive produce the movie Sister Dance, story inspired by the annual dance competition he hosts alongside her sister, Venus. Moreover, Ronda Rousey signed a three-picture movie deal that will reflect on her passions about female empowerment.
Selena Gomez is set to executive produce a scripted drama inspired by her own life experiences, navigating a career in Hollywood as seen through the eyes of her friends who quickly become her most trusted inner circle. On the production team Gomez will be joined by Kevin Spacey, Mandy Teefey, Dana Brunetti, Samantha Droke and Troy Searer.
We expect the biggest variety in scripted development which will bring genres ranging from comedy, to drama, to Shakespeare inspired horror-mysteries. Lifetime is known for their successful unscripted programming (i.e. critically acclaimed UnREAL, Project Runway, Dance Moms and more) and is planning to bring more. Fashion Inc. is Lifetime’s latest offering for today’s trendsetting audience. Set in New York City’s fashion district, aspiring fashion and beauty entrepreneurs compete for the chance to secure funds from a panel of expert investors to help grow their ventures.
All that and more coming to Lifetime soon!
