Ten Events To Look Forward to At This Year’s TriBeCa Film Festival

There’s a ton of cool stuff to check out.

1. Storytellers-Patti Smith With Ethan Hawke

Whenever you get a chance to witness such great artists in conversation together, you can’t pass it up. For decades Patti Smith has been an extremely influential artist across the spectrum from music to literature. A chance to see her discuss her career with the awesome Ethan Hawke, who always takes the most interesting roles he can get, this is sure to be a fun and revealing conversation.

2.  Directors Series- J.J Abrams With Chris Rock

J.J Abrams is solidifying his career as one of the best sci-fi directors around with each new film he comes out with. After the success of Star Wars: Episode VII, it’d be great to get the chance to what he has to say about where his career has been and where it’s going to be. Couple that with the phenomenally talented comedian, director, and storyteller Chris Rock, this is sure to be one of the most fun events of the week.

3. Director Series- Joss Whedon with Mark Ruffalo

Known for his work directing the hugely successful Avengers series as well as his work on the cult classic Buffy: The Vampire Slayer and Angel, Joss Whedon is certainly a director of fan favorites. To check him out discussing his career and work with colleague and corroborator Mark Ruffalo would be epic, especially for anyone that’s ever seen an Avenger‘s movie, and at this point, who hasn’t?

4. From Film to Game

More and more, video games are blurring the lines between the traditional action and fun they’re known for to immersive storytelling. While some may scoff at this supposition, the possibility of games to be a storytelling platform on the level with film is certainly possible. With Ken Levine from the video game Bioshock‘s team as well as Her Story creator Sam Barlow, and filmmaker Will Gluck, this is surely going to be an interesting conversation about the future of immersive storytelling.

5. Tina Fey With Damian Holbrook

Tina Fey is one of the funniest comedic writers and actresses around today. With her series “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” along with her steady appearances in film, it’ll no doubt be an entertaining and interesting experience to see what she has to say about anything. Coupled up with another funny writer in Damian Holbrook, you’re sure to be in for an interesting conversation to say the least.

6. Daring Women Summit

This event is interesting just for the sheer amount of amazing and groundbreaking talent that will be present, including Fashion Designer Donna Karan, actress & activist Rosie Perez, HelloGiggles co-founder Sophia Rossi, Google Entertainment Industry Educator in Chief Julie Ann Crommett, ‘Fresh off the Boat’ Showrunner Nahnatchka Khan, actress Mya Taylor, PYPO Creator Stephanie Laing, Chief Content Officer for Refinery 29 Amy Emmerich, New York Public ra-dio’s President & CEO Laura Walker, WNYC’s Death, Sex & Money Anna Sale, actress LaLa Anthony and many more. With such intrepid and trailblazing women it’s sure to be an awesome and empowering event.

7. Tom Hanks With John Oliver

Tom Hanks is one of those perennial American classics that has wowed and thrilled audiences with amazing acting and storytelling for decades. He’s one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. As you might not know, he’s also very funny and very clever. Pair him up with the hilarious John Oliver and I can’t wait to see what witty and hilarious tales the two will share.

8. Jodie Foster With Julie Taymor

Jodie Foster is one of those transcendent filmmakers who you know are truly dedicated and love the art of film. From her role as a teenager in Taxi Driver and beyond she’s been delivering amazing performances and now directs and creates great films. What makes this event even more special is that she’ll be paired up with Julie Taymor, a fellow director but for the stage. Taymor is most known for directing the Lion King stage musical. Watching two great directors of two similar but very different mediums will be thought provoking to say the least.

9. Alfonso Cuarón

Alfonso Cuarón doesn’t get the praise he definitely deserves. Few directors can claim the level of versatility and mastery that Alfonso has. He recently won the academy award for best director for the film Gravity, as well as directed such critically acclaimed films as Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Y Tu Mamá también. If those films don’t speak to the breadth of diversity of his work, I don’t know what will. The chance to see this talented filmmaker talk will be something we’ll remember for a while.

10. Master Class- Inside Casting

Casting might be the most overlooked part when we think about our best as well as worst films. The process of finding the right person for the role is no simple task. Out of the possible hundreds if not thousands of overwhelmingly talented actors available, it’s remarkable how casting directors and other involved come around to choosing the right man or woman for the job and even more astounding at how many occasions, most in fact, they choose the perfect people.
