On Thursday June 9th, The Knockturnal had the chance to attend the special screening and prom event for FIRST KILL at Netflix Home Theater. We got to see an advance viewing of the first episode before it launched globally on Netflix, which was then followed by a prom themed after party with music, photo opportunities and more! Although the vampire romance story can seem quite overdone, I promise you ‘FIRST KILL’ offers a completely new spin with a sapphic teenage love story between elite vampires and ruthless hunters just in time for pride month.
After checking in with staff we walked into the Netflix lobby where we were greeted with a giant wall displaying the ‘FIRST KILL’ poster. After mingling in the lobby we were escorted by staff down a hallway displaying little easter eggs and exclusive behind the scenes looks at some of your favorite Netflix shows like ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘Bridgerton’. All of us picked up a tub of popcorn and water and walked into the intimate theater. Once we were all seated we got to hear YA author V.E. Schwab, writer behind the short story ‘FIRST KILL’ is based on, talk about how much this moment meant to her. Schwab said, “I’m geeking for many many many reasons at this point, but one of them is that basically that three years ago I wrote this story, two years ago we started the writers room, one year ago we started filming, and here we are like…Oh my God! But the real reason I’m geeking out is because everyone on the team knows that I am the ‘Popcorn Optimist’. I’m the one who does not believe a thing is real until I can sit with a bucket of popcorn and watch it so today when I picked up my bucket of popcorn I realized this is finally real.” After watching the first episode with possibly the most fun audience ever, we headed out to the prom after party. At the after party we got to meet the cast of ‘FIRST KILL’ and share some drinks and food with all of them while the most amazing DJ played an amazing track list, resembling the amazing soundtrack of the show.
‘FIRST KILL’ is about a teenage vampire Juliette (Sarah Catherine Hook) who now has to make her first kill so she can take her place among a powerful vampire family, she sets her sights on a new girl in town named Calliope (Imani Lewis). But much to Juliette’s surprise, Calliope is a vampire hunter, from a family of celebrated slayers. Both find that the other won’t be so easy to kill and, unfortunately, way too easy to fall for. As if being a teenager wasn’t already hard enough, now these two must navigate a star-crossed romance in the midst of an ages-old feud. With tons of amazing queer representation, this show will have everything and more that an audience could want. This show reminds the audience how incredibly important it is that queer people can finally have their own version of the same cliche vampire stories everyone else has gotten their whole lives.
Season one of ‘FIRST KILL’ premiered June 10, only on Netflix.
