Women Sound Off threw a party called Some Cut at Chapel Bar that focused on R&B you wouldn’t hear in the club. The DJ’s were Red Corvette, Niara Sterling, and Dj 9am. They were the highlight of the party. Although the event focused on R&B, the songs were sped up to a house tempo you certainly would hear at the club. Chapel bar is an intimate and lavish space. It features a dimly lit crescent bar at its center and small sections against the wall. Chapel Bar serves equally well as an event space or a hangout spot. Some Cut found a good home for its R&B under Chapel Bar’s birthday cake of a chandelier.
Women Sound Off has previously hosted similar events in LA. Some Cuts is one of their first in NYC. The event hosts took the time to introduce themselves to all of us and explain a little bit about their purpose. The events are looking to be more than just a unique soundscape. Women Sound Off looks to curate events where their community can network. They emphasized their particular focus on creating spaces for black and queer women.
Chapel filled up quickly. The dance floor was thick with people speaking in groups for the duration of the event. The attendees came from across the entertainment field, from P.R firms to music labels. Women Sound Off successfully brought together a diverse group. A bicoastal event that brought a different flavor of sound would be a welcome addition to NYC nightlife.
