We recently had the chance to sit with director Ava DuVernay to discuss her new film 13th, a Netflix original documentary, which examines the United States’ status as having the highest rate of incarceration in the world, with the majority of the imprisoned being African-American. Named after the Thirteenth Amendment, which outlawed slavery, “13TH” synthesizes 150 years of history in order to examine how the criminal justice system affects people of color.
