Skip Marley, the grand-son of the Reggae music pioneer Bob Marley, took the stage of Gramercy Theater around 9. As the concert began, it was clear that Skip Marley is not only set out to make his own mark on the music industry but he will do it in his own way with his own sound.

Skip kicked off the concert with some of his grandfather’s classics such as “Coming in from the Cold”, “Three Little Birds”, and “Buffalo Soldier”. The songs seemed as a tribute not only to the legacy of the Marley family but the everlasting fans that appreciated the timeless classics that established what we know as Reggae.

From the classics to his own songs such as “Refugee”, “Slow Down”, and “Lions”- Skip’s gift was evident with his effortless ability to control the crowd and have a feel for what song would fit within the moment. The internal rhythm was instrumental as he closed his eyes and declared the lyrics of the songs from the past and the present time, he left his imprint with the fans of new and old.  As each song finished, those in attendance could not seem to get enough as they hung on every word, reciting each respected verse in harmony. Visually, there was little left up to imagination as the vivid colors that filled the theater coordinated with the vibes of the songs and tones of Skip and his backup singers and band.

The live acoustics made each song more vibrant- at one point Skip left the stage and then reappeared- as it felt like he could not get enough of the energy generated by those in attendance.

As the concert came to a close, Skip performed “To Be Loved’ and once again the crowd erupted in unison as sonically it felt like the peak of the night. Everyone in attendance seemed to have a level of appreciation not just for their fellow fans but all the band members, as Skip made sure to utilize not only his back up singers but his guitarist and drummer as well in spotlight fashion.

Skip Marley may only be 25 years of age, one thing is evident, his talent. He may have big shoes to fill as his Grandfather and Uncles are all Reggae legends in their own right but Skip Marley is blazing his own path and seems determined to make his own impact on the music industry.
