Ray Romano made his directorial debut for the film Somewhere in Queens at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.

The movie follows Leo Russo and his son Sticks, played by Romano and Jacob Ward. Ward’s character plays as a basketball star who has hopes of receiving an athletic scholarship. His father Leo, will do what it takes to ensure that his son continues to play well to secure his athletic future. But his meddling in his son’s social dynamics proves to be difficult as he must keep his actions a secret from his observant wife and the rest of his Italian-American family.

Romano is known for his role in the CBS series Everybody Loves Raymond, incorporating creative and comedic elements in the film that he is known for displaying. Somewhere in Queens shows the lengths flawed parents go through to ensure their children’s success. The mixture of comedy, drama, and awkward moments, allows for a unique storyline. Along with directing the film, Romano was also one of the lead stars, screenwriters, and producers. Romano described the process of creating the film during the Covid-19 pandemic and the number of years the overall process took. He states, “…my agent said okay, there’s a movie here, let’s make this movie, and then covid hit, and we waited a year, and then we started again in the middle of covid… It’s a year ago this week that we wrapped last June.”
