Raja’s performance was fire and so is the album
On Thursday, February 21st, singer, songwriter, and rapper Raja Kumari hosted a special party to celebrate her latest EP Bloodline. At this event, hosted at Gospel in Soho, Raja performed hits from this EP along with other notable songs that she had released in her first EP The Come Up. Raja has this innate ability to captivate audiences both with her vocal abilities and her dance style. What was especially cool about her performance was how she incorporated classical Indian dance into the performance, one of which was her performance of her song “Meera.” Interestingly enough, before she performed this song she prefaced how proud and important this song was to her, incorporating Hindi and Sanskrit into a song that would be performed throughout America. This is something new that Raja brings to the table. There isn’t much representation of Indian and South Asian culture in music which is why she has such a dedicated South Asian following.
In the moments where Raja performed some of the songs from this new EP, she performed it with passion and really sold the music to the audience. The EP itself mixes hardcore hip-hop styles with Indian traditional music and concepts and it is straight fire. The theme of this EP centers on maintaining success and getting money, which makes sense with the EP being a successor to The Come Up. And this EP has some notable songs such as the hit “Shook” as well as her latest single “Karma.” Overall, Raja is a force to be reckoned with and is a star in the making. We cannot wait to see and hear more from her soon.
Additionally, Raja Kumari is currently on the road. She can be found on tour with MNEK with dates in Toronto, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco next week. Known for her high-energy performance skills, The Los Angeles Times recently commended her live show at the 2019 Women’s March, exclaiming that Raja “enraptured the audience through her blend of Indian music with hip hop.” Find tour dates below.
