Early Monday evening we were invited to an exclusive preview of The Life & Death of Kenyon Phillips, an amazing new show at trendy lower east side nightclub the Box.
The show, described as aΒ dreamlike autobiographical rock opera,Β uses an interactive rock-cabaret-variety show format to tell the story of deathΒ and resurrection. Β Our preview began with the funeral for Mr. Phillips, asΒ we were invited to view his coffin and pay our respects. Β Suddenly, to the ‘funeral director’s’ mockΒ surprise, Kenyon lept from his coffin andΒ began the show. Β Accompanied by anΒ all-female backing band dressed in dreamy white gowns, Kenyon led the enthusiastic crowd through a sampling of songs and performances from the show. Β A highlight was when he decided to order a pizza, only when the ‘pizza delivery girl’ arrived on stage she performed a wild acrobaticΒ dance – danging from a rope high above the stage.
βI hope people can see this show and forgive themselves for their sins,β said Phillips. βI want to take them on a journey from darkness, fear and death into light, love and life.β
Director Cady Huffman is taking a lighter approach to the project. βIβm beating Kenyon up for a few weeks,β laughs Huffman. βThen you get to have him.β
We can’t wait to see what other surprises are in store for the full performance of the Life & Death of Kenyon Phillips when it opens on March 11thΒ at the Box.
