New York, NY – The highly anticipated Tribeca Film Festival showcased the music documentary “Uncharted,” on June 10th, 2023. Directed by Beth Aala, “Uncharted” provided an intimate glimpse behind the scenes of the music business. This remarkable film shed light on the lack of access and opportunity granted to young black and brown women, as they strive to break through in the industry.
“Uncharted” delved into the journey of aspiring artists participating in Alicia Keys’ She Is The Music songwriting camp. With each participant’s story taking center stage, the film followed Ayoni from Barbados, DaVionne, from Atlanta, and Chicago-born Jean Deaux.
Director Beth Aala guided the audience on a transformative journey, capturing these young women in both their electrifying performances on the road and their intimate sessions at the songwriting camp. The film allowed viewers to hear from professional mentors, including Alicia Keys herself, as they shared their ambitions and challenges in navigating the music industry. Keys, a notable presence in the documentary, candidly discussed her struggles and unwavering dedication to empowering women in music.
The premiere of “Uncharted” at the Tribeca Film Festival was a resounding success, captivating audiences with its poignant storytelling and raw authenticity. Keys introduced the talented artists featured in the documentary as they made their way to the BMCC stage. Ayoni, DaVionne, and Jean Deaux all performed. Most notably, Jean Deaux performed her song “STank Ass Walk,” which was featured on Issa Rae’s show “Rap Shit.” Keys concluded the unforgettable evening with a mesmerizing performance of her iconic song, “Empire State of Mind.”
Directed and produced by Beth Aala, “Uncharted” was a production of Everywoman Studios, with Ayana Baraka serving as the director of photography and M. Watanabe Milmore as the editor. The film boasted an impressive lineup of executive producers, including Abby Greensfelder, Katie Couric, Alicia Keys, and Jody Gerson, among others.
