The Knockturnal attended Dan Liu’s show early morning Saturday for NYFW. Liu is a Chinese-Japanese designer based in Canada, who draws inspiration from his assorted cultural background—many of his looks suggest a slight hint of the orient, with its gold linings and intricate patterns.
Floral seemed to be the theme of Liu’s show that morning; roses were carefully arranged for each audience in the seating, creating an initial aura of efflorescence. Many of the looks were deeply influenced by an air of spring: a hue of pastel pink dominated the opening part of Liu’s show, combined with laces and bold makeup. Models even had butterfly patterns imprinted next to their eyes as if to legitimize the show’s theme of verdancy.
The colors gradually became bolder and darker, showcasing more elegant looks. Liu curated several black dresses, but was also not afraid to play with bright hues and mixing colors in one look. The last dress was a long black airy (rather puffy) gown that chose not to accentuate the figure of the model. The show closed with a comical act by Liu, as he pretended to read the papers and acting surprised as his models walked by him—he then proceeded to blow kisses at the muses.
