NYFW: Sergio Hudson’s S/S 24 Collection Juxtaposes Corporate Alongside Bold

Sergio Hudson's upcoming ready-to-wear line proposes the return of structured silhouettes and experimentation with billowy fabrics

On Sunday evening, as the rest of New York underwent a rainstorm, the attendees of an evening NYFW runway show experienced an event similarly tempestuous.

At Spring Studios in Tribeca, designer Sergio Hudson unveiled his S/S 24 ready-to-wear collection: Collection 12.

American fashion designer Sergio Hudson, perhaps most well-known for dressing Michelle Obama, Keke Palmer, and Vice President Kamala Harris, has established himself for bringing bold, monochromatic looks to the runway. This year’s Collection 12 was no different, but it also brought a corporate twist to the looks. The designer ventured into experimenting with textures by adding billowy fabrics such as a pleated chiffon skirt, but also remained true to what has worked in the past for his brand – the answer? Form-fitting silhouettes. Even some of the front-row attendees sported these iconic, structured suits.

Borrowing the existing structured silhouettes, notable pieces that used this foundation included a blue belted wrap coat with a pronounced collar as well as several suit jackets (even in leather!). Along the same vein, the collection also showcased outfits with ties.

The first look was a classic white button-down shirt, enclosed by a denim suit and a black tie – perfect for a corporate woman who is seeking to add a more unique flair to their outfits. Another look, using a white button down and black tie once more, added a black sweetheart neckline corset to the fit, juxtaposing the loose-fitting sleeves with the body-slimming effect of the corset dress.

Sequins, of varying sizes, also made an introduction. What this collection does particularly well is striking a balance between aesthetics and moods. Interested in something more modest but still lands a statement? There’s an orange silk chiffon top with a sashaying bow around the neck. Or, the olive top with a deep v that flatters the torso. Want something for a night out that captures attention? Take the long sleeve top with silver fish-like scales that radiate a sequin-like effect.

This collection stands out for its versatility, particularly for those who are looking for something at the intersection of corporate and bold. Sergio Hudson’s ready-to-wear line will be available next year.
