Michael Christmas has the potential to become my generations’ every-man rapper.
What A Weird Day, like his previous release Is This Art? is the perfect background music for browsing the aisles at your local bodega or sitting down to a dollar patty and some quarter water. Michael’s attitude towards growing up broke and awkward is sketched out with ample positivity. That’s not to say that Michael is stepping out of reality, heavier cuts like “Look Up/Save The Day” and “Think You Grown” speak with a type of maturity you grow into a little too quickly when you grow up in an impoverished neighborhood.
The album is cohesive, well thought out, and Michael explores flows outside his comfort zone with the confidence of a seasoned emcee. He’s able to hold his own when tied to Logic’s fully automatic flow, and up the lackadaisical factor sitting on a track with Mac Miller. I also find Michael’s buffet delivery of emotional and lighter material is an honest mixture you’d get from a good friend. What A Weird Day has Michael sharing his pain and joy with the listener in the most organic of ways. I can’t help feeling anything but happy for Michael. He’s getting exposure, nods from OG’s and mainstream cats, and he’s cultivating a following of honest and loyal fans.
Art by your homie, Arthur Banach.
