It’s more than just smoky

Mezcal has always been a polarizing spirit that many think is just smoke forward spirit that belongs only in cocktails.  However, Mala Mia Mezcal challenges that idea completely by creating a quality mezcal offering that can not only be used in cocktails but can also be sipped individually.  Using quality agave varieties and traditional Mexican harvesting and roasting processes, Mala Mia is able to produce four distinct expressions that have tasting notes from smoky and earthy to floral and citrus.  And last week, we tried all the expressions of Mala Mia as well as enjoyed the mezcal in craft cocktails.

The first expression is the Espadin which is a perfect expression for sipping and tasting.  Having a subtler flavor profile that is slightly sweeter and less conventionally smoky, it pairs effortlessly with any cocktail that you are making.  The second expression Mala Mia offers is the Ensamble which blends more than two agave varietals to create a layered tasting profile that boasts beautiful herbal and grassy notes.  The Cuishe is the third expression that is a bridge for the gin lovers out there.  This particular expression has a wonderful dryness and herbaceous flavor notes to it that resembles the typical botanical flavors from a well-made gin.  Lastly, there is the Tepeztate expression that is made from one of the rarest agave varietals in Mexico.  The harvesting the transportation weighs up to 890 lbs and takes up to 28 years to mature.  All of that creates a roasted and spicy flavor profile that warms your palate entirely.

And if you aren’t the sipping type of spirits drinker, Mala Mia is the perfect base for some of the classic cocktails.  While at the tasting, we enjoyed Mala Mia in several different types of coctkails, from a Manhattan all the way to an Espresso Martini.  Mezcal is a great substitute to the other typical spirits and actually accentuates the other ingredients beautifully.  What makes Mala Mia even better is that they offer a tasting package that comes with all four expressions so you can mix and match to your heart’s content.
