Concert Review: Loco Dice and Par Grindvik Headline Output

This past Wednesday, November 23rd, techno lovers celebrated Thanksgiving Eve doing what they do best, raving at one of the hottest electronic spots in town!

If you live in NYC and enjoy electronic music as much as I do, you have probably heard of Output located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Not only is this club an amazing space and very different than many other NYC clubs, but the talent they present is just stellar.  This is not a club for one to dress up and sit down around VIP tables to enjoy drinks. This is a club that truly allows you to appreciate the artistry behind the beats while you dance and mingle with those who have a similar appreciation to yours.

This evening’s headliner was the legendary Loco Dice. Although he is one of the biggest names in the electronic music world now, he started off as a Hip Hop DJ and a rapper. He’s talented in many genres of music, but the techno sets this German DJ delivers are just spectacular. At around 2 a.m., after the talented Eddie Fowlkes shined on his DJ booth, the crowd gathered around for the appearance of Loco Dice. By this point, the place had completely crowded up. Everyone came together and one could see the smile on people’s faces as they felt the ‘booms’ going through their skin.

Not everyone can deliver a good techno set, especially for 4 hours like Loco did. It requires a lot of skill, technique, and knowledge of the genre. Since many may feel that techno is repetitive because there are very minimal to no lyrics, and similar electronic sounds it can be easier for one to start feeling like the music is stuck and not moving anywhere. Loco Dice was so crafty with how he delivered each build and drop. It was really hard for one to get “bored”, however, because of the amount of people, the closed space and the long hours of pure dancing, one could take a break from the Main Room.

There were two options, you could go upstairs where they had an open area for smokers and socialers. My favorite part about this area is that they had elevated platforms where people could sit and even lay down on extremely big and comfy pillows. The other option was to cross the outside corridor and go to the Panther Room.

This night, the Panther Room got very lucky since Par Grindvik took over the stage a little before Loco Dice’s performance. Par Grindvik has made a huge contribution to the techno world and has really impacted the techno scene in his hometown, Sweden. The DJ was able to show off his skillset to the output crowd, who was clearly enjoying the beats that were being thrown. It was really cool because although it’s a smaller space, there is surprisingly more room to dance as freely as one wants to. As people swayed to techno and bonded over the joy this set was bringing them, they cheered Grindvik to keep feeding them his incredible mixes. The lights were being reflected from a huge disco ball, which, combined with Grindvik’s presence and the energy of the crowd created an extremely exciting environment, one that made you never want to leave.
