Theater Review: ‘I’m Bleeding All Over The Place: A Living History Tour’

If you’re into experimental theater then this show is for you!

Brooke O’Harra’s newest piece, I’m Bleeding All Over The Place, hits LaMaMa’s Ellen Stewart Theatre.  What is very unique and cool about this piece of theater is that it really isn’t theater.  There is acting and dialogue around it but it is essentially a tour where audience members travel around the venue and witness dialogue from the ten actors in this piece. I’m Bleeding All Over The Place explores the intimacy and emotion that goes into everyday conversation. Dissecting what it means to really communicate, this piece is extremely experimental, but is very refreshing at the same time.  What this piece also does is it explores the relationship between actors and audience members in a theater medium.

Because I’m Bleeding All Over The Place is so experimental, it is sometimes hard to figure out what is going on. But with material like this, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Even though the dialogue is pre-written and the actors have memorized their lines, it is up to the audience to find clarity in the words and make sense of what is happening. But, with the interactive aspect of this tour, it is still a lot of fun to sit through. I personally believe that the best part of this piece is at the end, when you are left to reflect, you really have no idea what you just witnessed. However, as days go by you will slowly start to make sense of what you just saw.  It’s interesting how it invites audience members to create their own story and their own meaning of the piece where typical theater usually has a direction and wants to communicate one, singular story to the audience.  I’m Bleeding All Over The Place wants you to be confused, to wonder, and to make sense out of it without there being a story behind it.
