There can never be too much glitter and glam at New York Fashion Week.
The Hakan Akkaya Fall/Winter 2019 runway show was a full production of glitz, glitter, and rock & roll. In a new direction from seasons prior, the Turkish designer channeled the 1970s and 1980s with rockstar-chic looks that have clearly held up over time.
From the colorful light show to the classic rock hits, such as “Under Pressure” by Queen and David Bowie, models strutted down the runway in platform boots, exaggerated shoulder pads, stud-detailed makeup looks, and blown out wigs that emulated hair bands. These head-to-toe glam rock-inspired looks and a vast amount of glitter created a show that was a bit kitschy but in the best way.
Akkaya’s latest collection is playful yet displays his tailoring skills and eye for designing well-cut pieces for anyone.
“This season, Hakan Akkaya created a collection of fearless iconic proportions and glamorous rock stars. Hakan was also inspired by Turkish stars such as Hayko Cepkin, Baris Manco, Zeki Muren, and many Turkish icons,” stated the show notes. “The extravagant clothing and visual styles of performers were often androgynous and have been described as playing with nontraditional gender roles.”
A collection that reflects its androgynous, unisex intention, Akkaya’s models wore pieces that could fall between menswear and womenswear. Though retro-inspired, the show was futuristic–shoulder pads almost seem like the future in the fashion cycle, but classic furs and outerwear ensured a modern yet timeless aesthetic.
