The “Freeheld” cast has made it’s way to New York for a special screening.
Guests from the film included director Peter Sollett, Producers Kelly Bush Novak, Michael Shamberg, Stacey Sher, James D. Stern, Julie Goldstein, Jack Selby, Cynthia Wade, Executive Producer Ameet Shukla, Cinematographer Maryse Alberti, Costume Designer Stacey Battat, and Casting Director Avy Kaufman. Cast in attendance included Julianne Moore, Ellen Page, Michael Shannon, Josh Charles, Skipp Sudduth, Dennis Boutsikaris,and Jeannine Kaspar. Subjects who walked the red carpet included Dane Wells (played by Michael Shannon), Steven Goldstein (played by Steve Carell), and Lynda Hester (sister of Laurel Hester). Following the screening everyone gathered at the after party at Omar’s La Ranita to celebrate.
Freeheld is a drama starring Julianne Moore. She plays Laurel Hester a terminally ill Ocean County detective. Directed by Peter Sollett and written by Ron Nyswaner, the film captures the life and battle of Laurel Hester. Ellen Page plays her partner Stacie.
The film tells the true story of Detective Lt. Laurel Hester who was a criminal investigator with the Ocean County Prosecutor’s office for 25 years. At the age of 49 she was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. During her fight with cancer, she battles the Board of Freeholders to approve her request to leave her pension to her same-sex partner. Shortly after the county decided to deny her request, her story made headlines. With a little less than six months to live, Laurel refuses to back down when officials deny her request. This film is structured around Laurel’s battle with the Freeholders and her declining health as cancer spreads from her lungs to her brain. The film has a limited opening on Oct. 2, and expands to wide release Oct. 16, 2015.
