Film Review: ‘Game Night’ Is The Comedy You Didn’t Know You Needed

A standout comedy movie for 2018 so far

Game Night, starring Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams, is 2018’s best action comedy movie so far.  Max (Bateman) and Annie (McAdams) are this hyper-competitive couple when it comes to family-friendly games.  They regularly have game nights with their group of friends, but it isn’t until Max’s brother comes into town where things go wrong.  What should have been a simple “find the missing person” murder mystery game turns awry quickly when a group of kidnappers grab Max’s brother and hold him for ransom.  It’s up to Max and Annie to find his brother and get him out of this mess safely.

Game Night seemed a lot like the Tina Fey movie Date Night, or at least that’s what we thought going into this movie.  However, the first ten minutes proved us wrong just with the type of humor Game Night uses.  The jokes written for this movie are very dry, but somehow lighthearted at the same time.  Game Night seemed to master the art of presenting something funny without even telling a joke.  I think one of my favorite scenes was just watching Max’s neighbor hold his puffy white dog while constantly yearning to be invited to one of their game nights.  Game Night isn’t one of those comedies that has a very, very loose plot that rides on the jokes to have the substance.  Instead, there is a well-rounded plot with a good mix of funny one-liners all the way to very smart and well thought out jokes that make some sort of social commentary.

Game Night comes out on Friday, February 23rd, so if you’re looking for a fun date night movie, this would be a winning bet for you.
