It is as empowering and cathartic as much as it is a confidence-building mechanism. In 2019, it makes all the difference in the world. That is what makes our fashion editorials so important! Rocking suede Gucci pants and riding in luxury convertibles, it’s the life of glamour everyone wants to partake in. However, having a fashion-forward mantra isn’t everyone’s thing. Salma Slims (aka First Lady of Private Club Records along with MadeinTYO and 24hrs) is foreign to all that, effortlessly rocking her cargo pants and high heels with a futuristic & vibrant sense of style. Her obvious confidence and not-so-sorry attitude are on full display but growing up Muslim and being into hip-hop and fashion can be a tricky balance, one that Salma seems to conquer with rare grace; it’s her diversity that makes her sensational. With her music career taking off, Salma has also been a part of recent Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein campaigns.
We had the pleasure of talking to her about everything from her music to her fashion game. A budding fashion icon in the making, Salma speaks about living her best life and looking her flyest. Residing in LA with husband 24Hrs, Salma is fully reaping the benefits of residing in a Medina of both fashion and entertainment. She may also be stashing some FIRE features. According to her recent LA Weekly interview, we can expect features from 24Hrs, MadeinTYO, Slim Jxmmi, Problem, Kap G and Ty Dolla $ign for her up coming debut Runway Rapper. Look out for that!
The Knockturnal: What are your fashion influences?
Salma Slims: ASAP Rocky, Rihanna, and Naomi Campbell. Literally if all 3 of them had a baby that would be me. I like Kanye West fashion as well he’s very simple but yet so fly and it looks effortless when he steps out.
The Knockturnal: Your look is amazing! I bet it feels great to know you’re always swagged out in the room.
Salma Slims: Oh yes big drip don’t slip. I keep these bitches on their toes i’m on their necks with the drip. But all Jokes aside, I never really knew I was fly until this year. Literally every single person I meet says “Your killing it with the looks” and I always say “Really!” I didn’t know I was that fly. I want to take my fashion to another level and eventually walk in Runway shows.
The Knockturnal: Now that you’ve been touring for a while would you say its hectic to always change outfits when you’re on the go?
Salma Slims: YES! it is hectic because I like to have an outfit for meet and greet and also for when I am performing so i have to overpack and I end up having like 3 suitcases full of clothing. It always helps when brands send me clothing to wear on tour because other than that it’s so hard to make sure I have 2 looks per day without repeating outfits. My go-to performances look are baggy cargo pants, bra tops and a cozy fly drape jacket, I can never go wrong with that.
The Knockturnal: What are some of your favorite all time brands?
Salma Slims: Tommy Hilfiger, Gucci, Balenciaga and True Religion.
The Knockturnal: If we were to rummage through your handbag, what are some of the accessories we would find?
Salma Slims: Wow! no one has ever asked me this I love this question. Lipgloss, hand scrub, matte touch up powder, mini hot sauce, sunglasses, hella candy, and a vape pen.
The Knockturnal: Let’s talk about your music: Any new EP dropping?
Salma Slims: My debut project “Runway Rapper” is dropping End of FEBRUARY. I have some dope features on it also.
The Knockturnal: What is your plan for 2019? Are you touring again?
Salma Slims: Yes! I can’t wait to go back on tour it’s been a few months since the last tour. I always feel weird when I’m not performing. It’s almost that time again. As soon as my project drops I’m back on road.
The Knockturnal: What are some of your favorite sneaker brands right now?
Salma Slims: Reebok Classics by trouble Andrew! dude, they are so comfortable. MadeinTYO got them for me and I can’t stop wearing them.
The Knockturnal: What is your dream collab? One for being featured in as a model and another in terms of a brand collab.
Salma Slims: At the moment I would love to work with Cardi B, J Cole and Kendrick Lamar… a dream brand collab would be to have my own sunglasses collection with MIU MIU and also be apart of the campaign as a model.
