Fair Play: Private Screening of Chloe Domont’s Latest Film Captivates Audiences

The drama starring Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich is on Netflix starting October 6.

Fair Play, is a story about a newly engaged couple Luke (Alden Ehrenreich) and Emily (Phoebe Dynevor)  who ultimately meet their demise after an unexpected promotion. Set in modern day New York, the relationship of the financier couple begins to transform from supportive to sinister when ego and cutthroat ambition begin to provoke insecurities. As one partner begins to harbour jealousy and boils to a breaking point, the other lets success get to her head. Can this couple untangle themselves as the stakes continue to rise?

In a Q+A with writer and director Chloe Domont, she specifically emphasizes that “more than being a film about female empowerment, this is a film about male fragility”. Domont perfectly balances emotional tension with physical outbursts, leaving the audience gasping, cheering, and at times, shocked in their seats. The film premiered in January 2023 at the Sundance Film Festival and has since racked up stellar reviews, in part due to the phenomenal acting from both Ehrenreich and Dynevor.

In the Q+A following the screening, Domont was able to shed more light on what decisions were intentionally made while filming the project. From interviewing hedge fund analysts, adding details to the set, to manipulating camera angles, Domont cleverly captures an unspoken tension building that ends up making even the audience feel claustrophobic.

Domont has a keen eye and interest in making films that blur the line between hero and villain. There is no easy black and white separation – each character is flawed, imperfect, and in all honesty, relatable.

See for yourself how things unfold. Find Fair Play on Netflix starting October 6, 2023.

From Monday, October 2nd – Thursday, October 5th in locations throughout New York City, Variety Gotham Week will feature screenings, filmmaker conversations, and The Expo, a thought leadership program hosted by The Gotham’s Expanding Communities partner organizations specifically covering the topics of advocacy and career advancement for film & media creators.
