Based on the book “Pornology” – a real-life story from author Ayn Carrillo Gailey – A Nice Girl Like You follows Lucy Neal (Lucy Hale), a young woman that is dumped and accused of being “pornophobic” by her boyfriend.
Determined to prove him wrong, Lucy embarks on a hilarious journey of self-discovery as she completes the naughty sex-to-do list she created. The good thing is she isn’t alone and she enlists the help of her friends (Mindy Cohn, Jackie Cruz, and Adhir Kalyan).
I had the pleasure of speaking with Orange Is The New Black star Jackie Cruz who plays one of Lucy’s besties, Nessa, in A Nice Girl Like You. We spoke about what it was like portraying her character in this film that does not hold back when it comes to the topic of sex. She describes her character as a normal girl who is not afraid of sex, watches porn, reads erotica, and is a little different than herself who grew up Christian and around a stigma regarding sex. “It’s kind of cool to talk about it in the mainstream media for women you know not to be afraid to sexually express themselves,” said Cruz. “Us women get judged a lot by being sexy or sexual and this movie makes you feel like no we are all the same and I think it’s healthy to express yourself sexually and learn little things here and there.”
The film is filled with plenty of funny moments that will definitely give you some laughs. Some of which Jackie happily shared with The Knockturnal like the cast’s experience filming inside a sex shop and playing with dildos. “The three of us together were cracking each other up and putting it everywhere,” Cruz said while referring to the scene. She told us about how non-judgmental the set was and how much fun she had with her co-stars (Hale and Cohn) while shooting. Whether you’re the Lucy in the film or the more experienced one in your friend group, A Nice Girl Like You has someone you can relate to and will definitely impact you in some way.
Currently, Cruz seems to be in a great place in her life even amidst the craziness going on in the world. She really opened up to us to tell us about how grateful she’s been feeling lately. A feeling and mindset she says stems from her time spent in Thailand while filming the 7th installment of Tremors. However, that isn’t the only upcoming project she is involved in. She’s also about to start production for a film in Puerto Rico soon starring Bruce Willis, Megan Fox, and Emile Hirsch.
