Check out our exclusive interview with Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani on “The Lovebirds”
The Lovebirds is a new action-comedy movie directed by Michael Showalter starring Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae. The movie follows a couple who gets mixed up in a murder mystery case and ventures out to avoid getting arrested and to find the real killers to prove their innocence. We got a chance to talk with Kumail and Issa about their experiences filming and their thoughts on the movie. When asked about a scene where Jibran (Kumail Nanjiani) and Leilani’s (Issa Rae) are seen as a really cute couple near the beginning of the film, Kumail talked about how during the entire mix-up, their relationship is strained and they would not get along with each other. However, it was important to establish in the beginning that these two are actually really good together. “In a lot of the movie, these two characters are in a rut. They’re arguing with each other, they’re not getting along, they’re not seeing eye-to-eye, so that first sequence is very important because you wanna see that these two people are great together and that they genuinely do love each other and that somehow they’ve forgotten that or aren’t in touch with that right now” said Kumail. Making the couple real and relatable to the audience was very important. “We wanted to take that real dynamic to the couple on screen.” said Issa, “We wanted couples everywhere to relate to Leilani and Jibran so that, to Kumail’s point, you didn’t feel like you were rooting for an empty couple. So, we tried to load them with things we related to personally in terms of relationship dynamics and personality traits.
