We sat down with Mo Vaughn to learn more about MVP collections, how he chooses the looks and his favorite pieces.
Partnered with co-founder and managing partner Diane Cutuli, Mo Vahughn is a three-time All Star and baseball MVP and has appropriately titled his men’s fashion line MVP Collections. What prompted Mo Vaughn to launch his own collection was his personal struggle as a larger, taller man to find fashionable clothing, or at least to do so without tailoring. His collection focuses on making whats on trend more accessible and affordable to men of larger sizes. Everything in the line is made in America and the sizes range from 1XL-4XL in tops and 38” to 50” in denim. The collection has three staple looks Athleisure, Weekend and Night Out. Check out our interview with Mo Vaughn below.
Can you tell us more in detail about the inspiration behind the line?
Over the years, shopping for clothing being a XXL, XXL tall, it became very difficult to find clothes and style that looked good so I just took myself as the customer and realized that we need to be able to offer some style and different options for the bigger guy. I also knew that I was able to go out and have a tailor make my clothes and make the style, what I want to do- and I have other businesses also, I want to create affordable housing for the less fortunate and I’ve been able to go out and provide something that is affordable for the average guy and that’s exactly how we got here, me being the actual customer looking for a certain style that were not out there and bring this to the everyday guy.
Can you tell us a little bit about the pieces featured in the collection?
We have an Athleisure piece, which is very important because now you’re getting the sweats ans the relaxed look and the nice fabrics. There’s the MVP Night Out Look and the MVP Weekend Look, with the button down shirts and the Air tee. We have the flannel shirts. We’re going to come out with a jacket. Now you have all different looks where you can be professional, casual, you can do a lot of things at the same time. So that’s what we’re trying to do with the whole line, give the guy options and comfort with the fabrics that we’re working with.
Would you want to expand into accessories, shoes, hats in the future?
Definitely, we’re built to expand.
What’s your favorite piece from the collection?
They’re all my favorites. The one I’m wearing right now- this is the Moto Jean and the Air Shirt. We’ve got everything like flannels and button downs, we got the Athleisure work here with the sweats and camo’s in so we did a little bit of camo. There are different washes, we’ve got the coated jeans with the leather look. Here’s the athletic fit which is a little skinnier leg. Here’s the Henley, with camouflage being on trend. There are hoodies and utility jackets.
Who are some of your style icons?
I’d say I try and make my own style. I think the first thing to me is comfort then the fabrics and then you wanna be cool. Like I said I’ve been very fortunate I can go out and when I see a nice jacket, my tailor can make it for me, now I’m tryna bring that in house for everybody else.
