Exclusive: Filmmakers Nick Johnson and Will Merrick Discuss Their Film “Missing

In 2018, Will Merrick’s thriller Searching drew audiences in with its unique form of storytelling, as the entire film was told through the screen of a computer. It followed a father, played by John Cho, as he searches for his missing daughter using various digital tools and platforms, including social media, search engines, and video chat. The film received critical acclaim for its innovative storytelling that had audiences on the edge of their seats. In addition, the filmmakers used real websites and software interfaces in the film to create a more authentic and immersive viewing experience.

In partnership with Nick Johnson, the filmmakers came together to create a brand new installment within the world of Searching. Their newest film, Missing, tells the story of a girl named June. When her mother disappears while on vacation in Colombia with her new boyfriend, June’s search for answers is hindered by international red tape. Stuck thousands of miles away in Los Angeles, June creatively uses all the latest technology at her fingertips to try and find her before it’s too late. However, as she digs ever deeper, her digital sleuthing soon raises more questions than answers.

From working with a brilliant cast to editing the entire film before they even shot it, Johnson and Merrick had some incredible stories about their experiences entering the world of Missing. We sat down with them to talk all about it, check out the conversation below!

Missing is available for digital purchase now and on DVD and Blu-ray on Tuesday, March 28!
