On Monday, HBO released the latest episode of their noir, crime thriller limited series Get Millie Black. The series, comprised of five episodes (four of which were available for review), was created and executive-produced by Booker Prize-winning author Marlon James, and co-executive produced by Simon Maxwell (CEO Motive Pictures) and Jami O’Brien.

The series follows “Ex-Scotland Yard detective Millie-Jean Black [who] returns to Kingston to work missing persons cases, soon finding herself on a quest to save a sibling who won’t be saved, to find a child who can’t be found, to solve a case that will blow her world apart and prove almost as tough to crack as Millie Black.” Tamara Lawrance stars as the eponymous Millie Black alongside cast members Joe Dempsie, Gershwyn Eustache Jr., and Chyna McQueen.

I got the opportunity to sit down with Marlon James, Simon Maxwell, and Jami’O Brien to talk with them about the inspirations behind the series, why they wanted to bring Get Millie Black to viewers, and what it means to represent LGBTQ+ and trans voices in Jamaica. You can watch the full interview on Youtube below.

If you want to learn more about my thoughts on the series and whether or not you should give it a watch, read my review of the series here.

Get Millie Black airs Monday nights at 9pm on Max and will premiere in the UK in 2025 on Channel 4.
