After years with Lionsgate, Tyler Perry is set to release his first film with Paramount Pictures, a comedy called “Nobody’s Fool.”
Besides being his first film released through Paramount Pictures in partnership with BET Films after signing with Paramount parent company Viacom, it is also Perry’s first R rated comedy. The film stars Tika Sumpter (who stars in Perry’s OWN hit TV series The Haves and Have Nots), Tiffany Haddish, Omari Hardwick, Mehcad Brooks, Amber Riley and Whoopi Goldberg, all of whom arrived at New York’s AMC Lincoln Square movie theater along with Perry to premiere the film. Other attendees included Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson, Gayle King and Michael K Williams.
In the film Sumpter and Haddish play estranged sisters who try to re-establish their sisterly bond after Haddish’s character Tanya is released from prison, as well as discover the identity of the mysterious unknown man that Danica (Sumpter) has been in an online relationship with. At the premiere Tika spoke about building a bond with Haddish saying, “As soon as we met, it was like we knew each other. We went out to eat, we drank we crashed a prom, we cried together in a club (well I cried). We just became friends and it was easy.”
EGOT legend Whoopi Goldberg portrays Lola, mother to Tanya and Danica. Both Sumpter and Haddish expressed excitement talking about having Goldberg play their mom. Tika expressed about her reaction learning Whoopi would play her mom. “I mean that’s the woman who made me feel like I can be who I am and be here right now, a girl from Hollis, Queens by way of Long Island. She’s everything, she’s my catalog of movies that I go back to.”
“It’s amazing working with Whoopi Goldberg she teaches me so much. She’s always on her p’s and q’s. So it’s really fun,” Haddish beamed about working with the icon.
Goldberg who previously worked with Perry eight years ago on the film For Colored Girls, simply said about why she returned to work with Perry again this time around, “He asked me.”
However Whoopi isn’t the only motherly character in the film. Glee’s Amber Riley who portrays Kalli said of her character, “I feel like my character is like a mama bear. I think that I’m that to my friends. I’m kind of the person everyone wants to talk things through with and I think Kalli is the same way.”
When it comes to telling when was a time she had to show someone that she was Nobody’s Fool, Haddish jokingly pleaded the fifth replying, “No, you trying to get me incriminated”.
After a over two decade career in film, television and theater, releasing dramedies such as his Madea film series, and more, there are still genres left to conquer for Perry. So what’s next for the media mogul? “I’m doing a sci-fi zombie movie, an apocalypse kind of movie. I’m real excited about it. I’m gonna be doing everything now.”
Nobody’s Fool will be released in movie theaters nationwide on November 2nd.
