The tour ran for one year across the United States and in Canada and that is where Cameron J. Wright was able to showcase his acting and musical talent.
After being in print ads, commercials, and voiceovers, Cameron J. Wright was casted on Netflix’s Family Reunion. On Family Reunion, Cameron J. Wright plays as Mazzi McKellan, the younger son of Cocoa McKellan (Tia Mowry) and Moz McKellan (Anthony Alabi). The series premiered in 2019 and the second season is set to premiere on April 5th. In this exclusive interview, Cameron J. Wright goes over a few details about the second season, his memories on Motown: The Musical, and his future.
The Knockturnal: How have you been holding up during this pandemic?
Cameron J Wright: “Well everything has been different and a little crazy. I feel pretty good on how things are going. I’m really glad that I was able to work on set during the pandemic and be 100% safe because they were taking every single percussion to make sure that we were safe. So it felt pretty comfortable to be back on set. There is a lot of changes. Everyone is walking around with masks and shields. All the wardrobe people had on the full-yellow gowns on. Everything was definitely a different experience. It felt really good to getting back to the familiarity of being on the set.”
The Knockturnal: Family Reunion is set to return in April to kick off the second season. What can viewers expect and anticipate on its return?
Cameron J Wright: ” Fans can expect some more family moments because the McKellan family always got something going on. They can expect a lot more musical moments and they can expect from my character (Mazzi McKellan) just to continue to develop and you will see his personality grow from season one, to season two.”
The Knockturnal: Since you have been on Family Reunion, have your parents got the chance to watch you on the show yet?
Cameron J Wright: “Yes they have! I am really grateful for my parents because my mom is able to take me to everything. If it was not for her, I would not be doing what I am doing. I am really grateful for her and I know that both of my parents are proud of me and it makes me happy.”
The Knockturnal: How did you prepare Mazzi’s character development for the back half of these episodes?
Cameron J Wright: “Something that I am grateful for, is me and Mazzi are similar characters. Something I had to prepare for is the musical side of Mazzi. Mazzi has a lot of things related to music on this season. That was something I had to tap in and it was not difficult tapping in that because I am a musician at heart. It is really cool just to express that on the show.”
The Knockturnal: How have you balanced in between acting and music since you are also a musician?
Cameron J Wright: “When you have a passion for something, you are able to make room for the crazy. I’ve always made sure to work hard. When I’m not acting, I’m keeping up with my music. My schedule can be pretty hectic at times, I really enjoy being busy because it is something that I love to do.”
The Knockturnal: What are some of your favorite memories being part of Motown: The Musical?
Cameron J Wright: “Motown The Musical was a really great experience. Getting to put on a show for people all over the country and in Canada was a great thing to do. I’ve had so many great memories over there being with the amazing cast. That is who I have been spending my time with for eight months and they were great people. Getting on the stage to tell a great story in front of the audience is the greatest part!”
The Knockturnal: What are some roles in different genres of television or movies that you would like to have one day in the future?
Cameron J Wright: “Honestly, any role that opens up for me it would be amazing for me. Something I would really like to do is a horror movie. I really love scary movies and I love to watch them with my family. It would be cool to see how the special effects work and it would feel like you are being inside the screen. That would be something that would be really cool.”
