Today, Kickstarter is launching its Dr. Maya Angelou campaign!

The project will eventually air on PBS and premiere in Spring 2016. It is directed by Bob Hercules and Rita Coburn Whack. The film examines her life from her birth in 1928 to her passing in May of 2014 – spanning the Jim Crow South, Civil Rights, Women’s & Art Movements, along with her impact on celeb and mainstream pop culture and she was interviewed before her death and a huge part of this film. An array of family, friends, celebs, and influencers were also interviewed for this film, as well as Dr. Angelou before her passing. The film will be impactful for those who miss her voice and for future generations who will continue to need to hear her impactful words of wisdom.

“She showed us that eventually, if we stayed true to who we are, then the world would embrace us… That it is OK to be your regular old self, whatever that is, your poor self, your broken self, your brilliant, bold, phenomenal self.”–Michelle Obama

Dr. Maya Angelou was an American author, poet, and civil rights activist. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, and several books of poetry, and was credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years.
