‘Documentary Now’ Is The Best Show You’re Not Watching

Helen Mirren. Fred Armisen. Bill Hader. Seth Meyers. Guest stars. Sumarlioi V. Snaeland Inigmarsson (he’s gonna be big guys, trust me).

If there’s ever a reason not to watch Armisen and Hader play random characters in a mockumentary, it better be an important reason, like trying to find the murderer behind the deaths of a local delivery boy, or the identity of a Mexican drug lord.

The SNL stars, along with SNL director and producer Rhys Thomas, have created this fake documentary television series on IFC. In a hilarious turn of events, Armisen and Hader go undercover in one episode to find notorious drug lord El Chingon, then are part of a crew filming the history behind previously prominent socialites within a small town. From there, they go on to play a man convicted for a crime he might have/might have not committed, and even follow the story of a festival honoring Al Capone.

Documentary Now brings along an eccentric sense of humor that you wouldn’t expect to come with such a mix of SNL stars, Helen Mirren, and guest stars ranging from Jack Black and Aidy Bryant, to John Slattery and more. The show is an intelligent comedic take on a topic that seems very overused and cliche, and its very form of story telling is almost interactive. Check out the trailer and be sure to check out the entire season (season finale was Oct. 2) immediately.

Catherina Gioino

Catherina "Cat" Gioino is a native New Yorker, a huge movie buff and an amateur pizzaiolo. She currently works in transportation policy in New York, and previously was a breaking news reporter for the New York Daily News, and had stints at MSNBC, NY1, PBS and the Queens Gazette-- and was at The Knock since the beginning. When she's not biking around her hometown of Astoria or testing out the train system of another country, you can find her slinging wine and drinks at a friend's local bar.
